Black Spectacles produces video courses for professionals who are either learning how to use the latest architectural software or studying for the Architect Registration Exam. In 2014 and 2016, the company produced a report on the the state of the architectural software industry. For the 2016 report, they asked our team at Pitch to create an infographic that shows which programs are highest in demand.
The viewer needed to be able to, at a glance, see the top 20 required programs in an image that’s sharable via the web and social media. We started off with some standard bar- and line-graph representations, and used circles of varying sizes to show variations in software requirements. But the treatments felt a bit dull, and not quickly comprehensible.
Our solution was to strip out graphs, and represent the current demand for each software by the size of the text. The variation in text sizes was a bit too subtle initially (above images 1, 2). We tried laying out the text as a single vertical column and make the text size variation more pronounced (above images 3, 4). The final version of the graphic is shown here.
The viewer can, at a quick glance, see the relative demand of the top 20 architectural software programs. Cyan text indicates software that increased in demand since 2014, while dark cyan text indicates software that decreased in demand. Upon closer look at the graph on the right, the viewer is able to read the relative change in demand for each program from the 2014 survey.
